Rooted in the concept of craft as a reflection of culture and identity, "Craft as Time Capsule" is a compelling documentation of Hsiao-Wen's thesis research. The book is divided into three parts, each examining the translation between the physical and digital realms from the perspective of craft. The typographic choices, a blend of Serif, Sans Serif, and Script typefaces, symbolize the enduring nature of crafts and human's utilization of technology.
The design of the book is inspired by letterpress, a key element in Hsiao-Wen's research on technology and web interface design. The grid and rigid layout of the book not only document the designer's research but also organize various other design projects, experiments, and references in a clear structure that supports the main thesis. This approach makes the book an archive of sorts, preserving the designer's research and other related works.
Despite the initial intention to print the book on newsprint papers with debossing on the cover, the plan was postponed due to the pandemic. However, this did not deter the designer from realizing the project. The book, designed in US letter size: 216 mm x 279 mm, was finalized in August 2020, following a year of research that started in 2019.
Aside from the book, Hsiao-Wen also built a website to document the research in another format. This dual approach provides an interesting comparison of the same content presented in two different mediums. It also further emphasizes the project's exploration of the transition between physical and virtual, material and data, user engagement, and experience from the perspective of craft making and preservation.
"Craft as Time Capsule" is not just a book; it's a testament to the enduring power of craftsmanship in an increasingly digital world. It is a unique blend of design research, book design, editorial design, graphic design, typography, print, craft, technology, archive, postdigital, and preservation. The project's recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in 2021 is a testament to its innovative approach and the remarkable level of excellence it exhibits.
